Stockport is once again getting ready to celebrate local businesses and individuals who go out of their way to make the borough a better place to work and live.
The annual Proud of Stockport Awards recognises those who do exceptional and extraordinary things to support our local communities. The awards, now in their seventh year, are organised by Stockport Council who are looking for local businesses to get involved.
I know many people and organisations who are proud of their Stockport roots but not so many who genuinely go out of their way to support and improve their local community. So these awards are important recognition for those who work tirelessly to make Stockport a better place.
The award categories this year include Ambassador for Stockport; won last time by Alan Newton the first Stopfordian to win an Olympic medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, Community-spirited organisation; won last year by Romiley Lifecentre, Volunteering Champion, Young Citizen of the Year, Sports Champion and Champion for Young People.
Stockport businesses can get involved either as a sponsor, nominator, nominee or other supportive partner – however you might be able to help the Proud of Stockport team at Stockport Council would like to hear from you on 0161 474 3074. I understand that Stockport Council are especially looking for businesses to get involved as sponsors as it is this sponsorship that enables these awards to take place.
And, if you know an individual, community group or business who you believe have made an outstanding contribution to their local community you can nominate them at www.stockport.gov.uk/proudofstockport.
All the winners and commended people will celebrate at a special Proud of Stockport event in the magnificent ballroom at Stockport Town Hall early next year, and the closing date for nominations is Friday 25th October 2012.
