Partner & Head of Military & Serious Sports Injury Claims
View profileHearing loss can result from damage to the inner ear caused by exposure to excessive noise and vibrations. Armed Forces personnel can sustain such injury whilst engaged in firearms training or due to explosions or other trauma related to ballistics/pyrotechnics, or exposure to loud noises from aircraft etc. whether through recurring or even a single exposure to high levels of noise.
Exposure to excessive levels of noise can also cause tinnitus (a ringing /buzzing noise in the ear which can be very upsetting and cause significant sleep deprivation and associated issues).
The Ministry of Defence has a duty to protect Armed Forces personnel , for example, by monitoring and reducing noise levels, providing personnel with safe, appropriate equipment (eg personal protective equipment including hearing protection ) and adequate training.
Not only must such appropriate equipment (including hearing protection) be provided but it should be compatible with other equipment , be properly maintained and replaced when necessary and personnel should be adequately trained in its usage.
The onset of hearing loss and tinnitus can be gradual or sudden. Due to the strict time limits which apply to claims it is important that you seek early legal advice if you believe / suspect you have suffered such injury.
