Fighting for the rights of pregnant women and new mums has netted employment lawyer Danielle Ayres of Gorvins Solicitors a top award for her work in pregnancy and maternity discrimination.

The 33-year old mother of two from Manchester was up against competition from some of the country`s largest and most prestigious law firms, including Mishcon de Reya, DWF and Clifford Chance, but received a unanimous vote from the judging panel thanks to her ground-breaking work in pregnancy and maternity discrimination, which lead to her being one of the winners of The Lynne Freeman Award, crowning Rising Stars in the legal industry.

The title is part of the prestigious Rising Star Awards which rewards and celebrates burgeoning female achievement in women under management level, regardless of age.

This has included the setting up of her own pro-bono employment surgeries at Gorvins, community centres and at mother and baby groups across the North West. She is also a volunteer for the UK’s only maternity charity, Maternity Action and is an advisor to the group Working Mums and Pregnant then Screwed, which is calling for a change in the law concerning pregnant women and those on maternity leave.

Commenting on her achievement Danielle said “I was honoured and delighted to have just been shortlisted for such a prestigious award since my fellow nominees are truly inspirational women – but I absolutely thrilled to be one of the winners.

I hope and will endeavour to ensure that my work continues to help women up and down the country who feel discriminated against by their employers.  I would like to extend my congratulations to all the finalists in my category and look forward to celebrating with the winners on 30 June.”

Vanessa Vallely, Managing Director of WeAreTheCity added: “It has been a total honour to run this year’s awards and highlight the achievements of so many amazing women. The calibre of entries was truly phenomenal.”
