The Right to Buy scheme has been formed by the government to enable social tenants (i.e. you rent your home from a public body such as your local council or government) in England and Wales the opportunity to purchase their property at a lower price than the full market value.
The scheme also applies to former local authority tenants who were living in their home when the council transferred to another non-charitable housing provider. In this instance it is sometimes called ‘preferred’ right to buy.
The scheme is available to those who have been a council or public sector tenant for at least five years in total, however this does not have to be in the same property or with the same landlord. It does not have to be continuous either as long as the total period spent in council property is five years or more.
