If you have been accused of a speeding offence, the Police may exercise their discretion and offer you a speed awareness course as an alternative to a Fixed Penalty Notice, which typically offer drivers 3 penalty points and a £100 fine.
Speed awareness courses are educational programmes which help drivers to understand the importance of complying with speed limits. To be eligible for a speed awareness course, you typically have to meet the following criteria:
- You have not committed a driving offence in the last 3 years
- Your recorded speed has to be within a certain range of the speed limit
Withdrawn Courses
Your speed awareness course offer may be withdrawn if you accept a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), your booking period expires, or you fail to attend and complete the course.
If you believe you have complied with a speed awareness course offer and subsequently receive an FPN relating to the same speeding offence, this may be a mistake. We are aware of an issue relating to a number of speed enforcement cases in the UK where speed awareness courses have been mistakenly withdrawn.
