Rochdale is located at the foot of the South Pennines and is around 10 miles northeast of Manchester. The town is primarily known for its industrial roots and was a major player in the wool trade in the early 18th Century. It has historically been one of the main hubs in the northwest of England for trade and industry and is the home of one of the largest banking corporations in the UK – The Cooperative. Originally known as the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society when it was founded in 1844, the group has ended up growing in to one of the top banking corporations in the world.
In recent years Rochdale has had some money invested in to infrastructure improvements. The Metrolink tram system now runs to it enabling people to commute to Manchester with ease. This has increased the demand for houses amongst first time buyers who can’t afford city centre prices. There are also regular buses to other towns in the area and Manchester city centre if the Metrolink isn’t a convenient choice.
Rochdale town centre has a large number of suburbs, that together create the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, with a population of 206,500 people. Whilst some of the areas surrounding the town centre can be seen as under privileged, there are some very desirable areas in Bamford and Norden. Alternatively, if you’d rather live in a more secluded area, Littleborough is on the outskirts of the pennines near Halifax. The average price for a 2 bedroom house in Rochdale is currently £94,489 and a 3 bedroom house will be around £144.097.
